Shikuhakku 四十八苦

Shikuhakku is a Buddhist term describing the world’s four primary and Total eight kinds of suffering.

  1. Being Born – You will inevitably endure pain and suffering throughout your life.
  2. Aging – All parts of your body weaken and are no longer as valid as it was when you were young.
  3. Illness – You will become ill and injured throughout your life. You have to withstand the pain of these sufferings.
  4. Death – It’s the most certain thing in this world. You will suffer the fear and regret that is associated with death.
  5. Having to deal with those who resent and hate. Maybe it’s a colleague or acquaintance. In life, you have to associate with people you might dislike, but there’s no way around it.
  6. Simply put, it refers to control of mind and body. The very act of the mind and body, in other words, the very act of living in this world, is suffering. By the way,
  7. Not being able to obtain what you want in life. It refers to the suffering of seeking immortality but not being able to obtain it. It also refers to the hell of not having your material desires satisfied.
  8. The pain of separation. It means that even those who love each other will eventually part ways and that even those who meet in this world are destined to part ways and be separated.
